Teaching Philosophy

As an elementary educator, I believe my role is to create an environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and strive to achieve their full potential. Since I was in elementary school, I have always had a passion for education. My teachers growing up made school somewhere that I looked forward to going everyday and always got excited to see what the day would bring. Especially at the elementary level, I think it's so important to instill this passion for learning in students at a young age so that they too, will be excited to come to school and learn everyday.

My goal is to cultivate a nurturing environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, working together, and learning from each other. I think the quote, "We must Maslow before we Bloom" is an extremely important mantra to follow in the classroom, because learning cannot happen if student's basic needs aren't met. I want my classroom to be a space where students know they will have everything they need to succeed.

Another thing I carry through my role as a teacher is the importance of assessment. I think as an educator, it's important to constantly be assessing how your students are doing and adjust your teaching accordingly. Whether formal or informal, I want to make sure my students understand a concept before moving onto the next one.

Having a background in special education, I have learned new ways to differentiate the content I am teaching. Differentiation is so important in the classroom, to make sure all student's needs are being met. With a large group of students, there are always varying levels of needs. It is crucial as a teacher to be able to identify these levels and plan instruction accordingly, so that all students are able to meet the objectives.

I believe school should be a place where children wake up excited to come to and discover what the day will bring. A place for students to explore their creativity and learn new and exciting things about the world around them. As an elementary educator, it is my goal to provide this experience for my students.
