Animal Research Project Information (Click to expand)

This animal research project provides an overview of a differentiated three day sample literacy & science unit designed for second grade. This unit can be differentiated by student or by group. The unit begins with each student or group being assigned an animal, and given an article about their animal. For this step, I gave each student an animal that I thought they would be interested in, with a corresponding article at their reading level. On Day 1, the students learn how to identify important information in a text, and then demonstrate this skill on their own article about their animal. On Day 2, students transfer their important information onto a graphic organizer to identify what they will use in their own writing. On Day 3, students compose a writing piece on their animal using the graphic organizer from the previous day. After students compose their writing piece, they are welcome to present their animal to the class. By clicking on the buttons above, you will find an outline of the three day unit plan, as well as the instructional materials and assessments necessary to teach this lesson.

Literacy Block Plan Information (Click to expand)

This literacy block plan provides an overview of a differentiated five day sample literacy unit on sequencing designed for second grade. This unit is designed to be used with three different reading groups for differentiation. On Day 1, the students are introduced to sequencing, and by Day 5, they are composing their own "How To" book to practice their sequencing skills based on a topic of their choice. This unit incorporates reading, phonics, and writing components throughout the five-day span to ensure reinforcement of the concepts across the curriculum. By clicking the button above, you will find an outline of the reading, writing, and phonics components for all five days of the unit. The instructional materials and assessments for this lesson are linked to the unit plan as well.
